Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

Spring Break in Salalah

We've been in Salalah, Oman, since Saturday, enjoying our Spring Break. Not only is this as close to Yemen as we're likely to ever get, it's the farthest away from land-across-the-sea I've been in recent years. I remember standing on the beach in Oregon as a child and thinking how you could get in a boat right there and sail and sail and sail and not hit any land until Japan. The thought at once terrified and thrilled me.

From Salalah, if you struck straight out into the Indian Ocean, you wouldn't hit land until Perth, Australia (roughly). Again, I find myself standing on the beach here and thinking about the almost endless stretch of water in front of me.

I have a touch of the blogorrhea about this place, but it will have to wait until we're home. In the meantime, enjoy this happily well timed video of everyone but me getting soaked by the blowhole at the caves near Mughsayl.
