Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

Tweaking a tradition

I mentioned a few weeks ago that we've been trying out a different bag of licorice allsorts each Friday. Somewhere along the way, I added a Finnish activity component, where the girls and  have a little Finnish lesson as we enjoy our candy.

I still had my eye on the exact allsorts mix that we ate at the one church activity, though. So at the next activity, I asked the lady where she got it and she explained that at some grocery stores, you can make your own allsorts mix for a flat rate per kilo! I was at once excited beyond all reason, but also scared because navigating that kind of unfamiliar terrain (scooping candy out of bins into a bag and then weighing it properly) would be hard for me even in my home country. I never spent enough time at Winco, I guess. I'm always worried I'm going to do it wrong.

Friday came and the girls and I went to the store. When it came time to try out the flat-rate bins, I wasn't sure I could go through with it. I was overwhelmed by grocery shopping in general and still had no idea how it all worked. And then: I saw a friend from church right there in the candy section. She showed me how to do it and we were all set! I gave each girl a bag and started to fill one of my own, too.

I was so focused on doing it right, though, that by the time I noticed, Majd had amassed six euros worth of candy. Six euros, when a kilo costs 8,95! I think it was the happiest day of her life when I told her we'd have to keep it since you can't exactly put the candy back in the bin once you've mixed it all together.

I think the candy bins are a new part of our Friday tradition now, and we'll be keeping the Finnish lesson, too. But this Friday, I think I'll limit the candy mix to 200g each, maximum.
