Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

Penkkarit

Today was Penkkarit - the last day of school for high school seniors. They still have to take their matriculation exams next month, but today was a day for celebration. The seniors from each HS in the area dressed up according to a theme and loaded up into colored, decorated trucks. Then they went on a one-hour parade around Turku's city center, throwing candy to children and smiling and waving at all the passersby.

I caught a few minutes of the parade during a break from teaching, and I'm so glad I made the effort to run downtown! I loved seeing these teenagers being so excited, and I loved seeing the entire community taking part in their celebration and encouraging them!

Here's a video of part of the procession. ABI, by the way (or Abi) is what you call high school seniors here. So Abiflix is a play on that.

The kids across the street were clutching bags already half full of candy, and they got plenty more.

This is my favorite one. I am so impressed with their grasp of memes in English!

And then it was time to run back to work. Seeing this parade energized me for the rest of the day - I love stuff like this.
