Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

Used to

I'm in my hometown and spending time with my siblings and parents and realizing how much we speak the language of "used to" when we are together, here.

"They have some of the same recipes that the deli used to make."

"At the Jamba Juice that used to be Zuka Juice."

"It's a right turn off where Kaiser Road used to go."

"Near where Evelyn's Bakery used to be."

It's as if the landscape froze when we were all growing up, and we are all still using it as our reference point, regardless of the considerable changes that have happened since. Never mind that Kaiser Road hasn't "used to" go that way for 15 years!
