Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

Winter transport

Winter transport

It’s been 3.5 years since we moved here and today was the first time I’ve ever driven to work (due to a strange confluence of circumstances that will likely not be repeated). I felt so fancy - imagine, walking into work wearing normal clothes and shoes and not having your hair all windblown and your face all wind-chilled! But I also felt lazy - where was the challenge? The effort? The sheer thrill of cycling or bussing to work in 20 below?!?

I did actually cycle to work in 20 below a few weeks ago. It was the morning of that blood wolf moon eclipse and the timing for my commute was just right for a viewing. Every once in a while there is an early-morning ride to work that just takes my breath away for more reasons than just the exercise, and this was one. Dark, snowy, cold, silent, and cycling toward a smoky red moon on the way to work.

Meanwhile, Sterling’s favorite mode of conveyance is a sled. He LIVES for his sled rides to päiväkoti. And thanks to the unusually snowy winter we’re having, he gets to go by sled almost every day. I leave the sled in the päiväkoti’s side yard to use for the trip home and it always brings a smile to my face to see that side yard filled with his little friends’ sleds, too.

Winter hasn’t overstayed its welcome yet (uh, it’s only February), and for now we are getting around just fine!
